Dukakis and Newman to Star in Reading of Under the Bed

News   Dukakis and Newman to Star in Reading of Under the Bed Academy Award winner Olympia Dukakis and Tony Award winner Phyllis Newman will be part of the cast of the first staged reading of Susan Sandler's new play.

Entitled Under the Bed, the Jan. 16 reading will be held at 7:30 PM at Makor, a program of the 92nd Street Y. Scotty Bloch and Sam Coppola will also take part in the reading of Sandler's new work, described as a play of "hilarious, heartbreaking and age-defying romantic gymnastics." Gus Kaikkonen directs. Olympia Dukakis won an Academy Award for her performance in "Moonstruck." Her numerous screen credits also include "Steel Magnolias," "Mighty Aphrodite" and "Tales of the City." Onstage she has been seen in over 130 productions. Dukakis' Broadway credits include Rose, Social Security, Who's Who in Hell, Abraham Cochrane and The Aspern Papers.

Phyllis Newman made her Broadway debut in 1952 in the original musical comedy Wish You Were Here. She received a Tony Award for her performance in Subways Are for Sleeping and a Tony nomination for her work in Neil Simon's Broadway Bound. Her other Broadway credits include Bells Are Ringing, First Impressions, Moonbirds, The Apple Tree, On the Town, The Prisoner of Second Avenue, The Madwoman of Central Park West and Awake and Sing! She married Adolph Green in 1960 with whom she had two children, Amanda and Adam. Newman is the founder of the Phyllis Newman Women's Health Initiative, part of the Actors' Fund of America.

Playwright Sandler wrote the play and the screenplay for "Crossing Delancey." Her other play titles include The Moaner and Kinfolks and Mountain Music. She is on the faculty of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.
