Classic Arts News   Early Music Specialist Fabio Biondi Appointed to Norwegian Post

Conductor Fabio Biondi has been named artistic director of early music by the Stavenger Symphony Orchestra of Norway, the SSO announced.

In his new position, Biondi will focus on Baroque and Classical repertoire. He will share the leadership of the SSO with Susana M‹lkki, who has been artistic director for Romantic and 20th-century music since 2002.

Biondi will take up his post in fall 2006; he has agreed to a renewable three-year term. He replaces Philippe Herreweghe, who held the position from 2001 to 2004.

A violinist, Biondi made his performing debut at age 12. In 1990, he founded the early music group Europa Galante.
