The L.A.-based East West Players is partnering with New Musicals Inc. to create a new musical, according to an announcement on the organization’s website.

“We’re looking to work together to create an important, powerful piece of theatre about the Asian-American experience,” stated Snehal Desai, EWP’s associate artistic director, online. “The show itself could be large or small, funny or dramatic, realistic or abstract, cutting-edge or traditional, but we’re hoping that it’s contemporary in its message and innovative in its storytelling. So whether you are working on the next Hamilton, Allegiance, or Here Lies Love, we want to hear from you.”

EWP is dedicated to producing artistic works and educational programs that explore Asian Pacific experiences. The organization previously collaborated with New Musicals Inc. on the development of Imelda. In this new endeavor, they hope to find several teams or projects in the early stages of development to nurture over the next year or two. One will be selected for professional production.

“Works which are very early in the process actually have an advantage right now,” added Elise Dewsberry, New Musicals Inc.’s artistic director. “Even if the new work is just a single paragraph and nothing more, we would consider it. This is an opportunity for our organizations to work together and create something special.”

Writers who are interested can submit excerpts from existing musicals, either finished or still in progress, or submit samples from their work along with a new idea for a musical.

Submissions are now open with a final deadline set for April 8. The winners will be announced April 20. For more information on submission requirements visit eastwestplayers.org/news/east-west-players-launches-musical-theatre-initiative/.
