Electric Pear to Present Balaton and Synesthesia in 2009-2010

News   Electric Pear to Present Balaton and Synesthesia in 2009-2010

The world premiere of Ashlin Halfnight's Balaton will be the first production of the 2009-2010 season of Off-Off-Broadway's Electric Pear Productions.

After presenting Halfnight's apocalyptic satire Artifacts of Consequence in April 2009, Electric Pair reunites with the playwright for this latest work about a Hungarian family struggling to stay together after the fall of the Iron Curtain.

Kristjan Thor directs Balaton, which will run Oct. 17-Nov. 7 at the Theatre at 30th Street. The cast includes Jessica Cummings (The Seagull, Crimes of the Heart), Kathryn Kates (Sa Ka La) and Peter O’Connor (Jailbait).

According to press notes, "Frightened and disoriented, Sabrina stumbles her way through a cold and indiscernible space, where time lurches forward, rushes back...and disarmingly stands still. In this liminal world, where memories replace and highlight reality, Sabrina and her divided Hungarian kin must confront the post-communist, Americanized world that has drastically altered their lives. Desperate for unity, the family struggles violently against the infiltration of fast food, designer clothing, infidelity, assimilation and uncompromising youth. And all the while, the stars shine above Balaton."

Electric Pear will also offer the 4th annual Synesthesia April 19-May 3, 2010, at The Wild Project. The event unites artists from film, dance, comedy, music, spoken word, puppetry and cuisine, who create their own variations on a theme in a form of artistic "telephone." The first artist receives a fortune cookie and spends two weeks working on an inspiration from the cookie. His or her work is passed on to the next artist, and so on. The event culminates in a public presentation.

A mid-season theatrical work, to be presented in February 2010, will be announced shortly. Visit ElectricPear.
