News Elmegreen, Fornarola and Silverman Are Samuel French Short Play Fest Winners The six-winning plays have been announced for the 34th annual Samuel French Off-Off Broadway Short Play Festival, which concluded July 19 in Manhattan.

Over 40 playwrights were represented in the festival, which began July 14 at the Peter Jay Sharpe Theatre. A panel of judges, including playwrights, directors and literary agents, selected the six winning one-act plays that will be published and licensed by Samuel French, Inc.

The winning entries are Just Knots by Christina Gorman; Drop by J. Michael DeAngelis and Pete Barry; Thucydides by Scott Elmegreen and Drew Fornarola; The Student by Matt Hoverman; Realer than That by Kitt Lavoie; and The Education of Macoloco by Jen Silverman.

Judges for the festival included playwrights Charles Busch (The Tale of the Allergists Wife, Die Mommie Die), Arthur Kopit (Nine, Wings), Leslie Lee (First Breeze of Summer, Black Eagles), Jordan Harrison (Doris to Darlene, Amazons and Their Men) and Billy Van Zandt (Love, Sex and the I.R.S., The Property Known as Garland).

Adjudicating directors were Jan Buttram (Abingdon Theatre Company), Evans Haile (The Cape Playhouse), Julia Hansen (Aspen's Theater Masters), William Hayes (Palm Beach Dramaworks), Jeffrey Rosenstock (Queens Theatre in the Park) and Jim Simpson (The Flea Theater).

Literary agents on the panel were Mark Subias (Subias), Elaine Devlin (Elaine Devlin Literary, Inc.), Derek Zasky (William Morris Endeavor), Ron Gwiazda (Abrams Artists Agency) and Jessica Sarbo (The Gersh Agency).
