The two titles join the previously announced John Doyle-directed revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Passion starring Judy Kuhn and Melissa Errico.
CSC artistic director Brian Kulick and executive director Greg Reiner announced the programming for the upcoming 45th anniversary season on May 31. Kulick will direct the Brecht classic.
Tony Award nominee and film star Hawke (The Coast of Utopia) will make his CSC debut in October with Ivanov, the 1880s play that Chekhov revised many times over the years. The staging is part of CSC's popular and acclaimed Chekhov Cycle, for which Pendleton directed Three Sisters and Uncle Vanya.
Hawke will be joined by Roberta Maxwell, George Morfogen, Juliet Rylance and Louis Zorich, all veterans of past Chekhov Cycle offerings.
Passion, the tale of an ugly woman, Fosca, expressing her love for a soldier, Giorgio, whose lover is the beautiful Clara, will follow. Tony-winning Sweeney Todd director Doyle will not be using his signature actor-musician format for the revival of the Tony-winning musical. Kuhn will play Fosca, Errico is Clara. Additional casting will be announced. CSC's mainstage season will end in April 2013 with The Caucasian Chalk Circle (1948), directed by Kulick. Composer Sheik won the Best Score Tony for Spring Awakening. Kulick directed the sold-out production of Brecht's Galileo starring F. Murray Abraham at CSC earlier this year. "Brecht's playful parable calls into question our basic assumptions of right in a world that has gone wrong," according to CSC.
The 2012-13 season will also reunite CSC with the Graduate Acting Program of the Columbia University School of the Arts for the eighth year of The Young Company, which offers works to New York City public school children. A version of Macbeth will be presented.
CSC will also bring back its popular Open Rehearsal Series, "featuring a company of seasoned actors and directors exploring a classic text over the course of three Monday evenings." Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet is the focus.
CSC will bring back its popular Books On Stage series, highlighting the work of Dostoevsky this season. On three successive Monday nights, CSC will present staged readings of The Brothers Karamazov, Crime and Punishment and The Idiot.
Subscriptions will go on sale to the general public on June 11. Patrons who join the Friends of CSC donors circle with a minimum tax-deductible donation of $145 in support of the 45th Anniversary Season will receive early access to subscriptions starting June 4.
