A private industry reading of the musical Reefer Madness will take place April 18 in New York City. Leading the cast will be SpongeBob SquarePants Tony nominee Ethan Slater as Jimmy and Gizel Jiménez, currently making her Broadway debut in Wicked, as Mary.

Stephen Brackett will direct the presentation, which is also set to feature Javier Muñoz (Hamilton) as Jack/Jesus, Tony winner Lena Hall (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) as Mae, Asmeret Ghebremichael (The Book of Mormon) as Sally, Eric Petersen (School of Rock) as Ralph, Robert Cuccioli (Jekyll and Hyde) as the Lecturer, and Aury Krebs as Placard Girl.

Rounding out the ensemble will be Eleanor Phillips, Heather Parcells, Genesis Collado, Sav Souza, Ryan Ortega, and Jacob Thompson.

Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney’s musical, based on the 1936 propaganda film, premiered in Los Angeles before a 2001 Off-Broadway bow. A 2005 screen adaptation followed with a cast including Kristen Bell, Christian Campbell (who serves as a producer for the reading), Alan Cumming, and Ana Gasteyer.

Joining Campbell on the producing team are David Carpenter, John Arthur Pinckard, and America Olivo. The reading will also feature musical direction by Matthew Aument and music supervision by Lance Horne. Casting is by Carrie Gardner.

Additional plan for the musical are expected to be announced later this year.
