According to the New York Times, the success of Evita has not only sparked interest in bringing other Andrew Lloyd Webber shows to celluloid (especially Phantom Of The Opera), but there's talk of Evita itself returning to Broadway. Once the Madonna film was released, rights to the material reverted back to authors Webber and lyricist Tim Rice. The Feb. 7 Times quotes Really Useful Company and Webber spokesperson Peter Brown as saying the project could go up "in the not too distant future."
Brown told Playbill On-Line that the project is on the table but still very much in the idea stage, with "no timetable yet."
Brown also confirmed that Warner Brothers is actively seeking a director for a film version of the Webber/Stilgoe musical, Phantom Of The Opera. No names or stars were mentioned. For now, no movie version of Sunset Boulevard is being discussed.
