The musical — which boasts the tunes of ABBA's Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus — will play Vancouver's Queen Elizabeth Theatre, July 22-Aug. 10. The company of actors is the same group who were playing Toronto's Royal Alexandra Theatre. That production announced a summer hiatus July 2-Sept. 29 due to fears that business would slump because of SARS, the communicable disease that has, according to The World Health Organization, had an impact on the Ontario city.
The Vancouver production stars Camilla Scott as Donna, Marisa McIntyre as Sophie, Nicole Robert as Tanya, Martha Reilly as Rosie, Kent Sheridan as Sam Carmichael, Andrew Wheeler as Bill Austin, Laurie Murdoch as Harry Bright and Todd Hofley as Sky. Others in the cast include Crystal Martinez as Ali, Jennifer Stewart as Lisa, Jay T. Schramek as Pepper and Sean Ban Beaton as Eddie, and the ensemble comprises Sarah Daurie, Scott Freethy, Larry Herbert, Lisa Ho, Robin Hutton, Sweeney MacArthur, Chad McNamara, Wayne McNamara, Anna Madgett, Justin Nurse, Christine Oddy, Louise St Cyr, Sean C. Robertson, Sherisse Springer, Jason Westlake, Rennie Wilkinson, Alison Woolridge, and Kevin Samual Yee.
Featuring music and lyrics by Andersson and Ulvaeus and a book by Catherine Johnson, the creative team for Mamma Mia! includes Anthony Van Laast (choreography), Mark Thompson (production design), Howard Harrison (lighting design), Andrew Bruce and Bobby Aitken (sound design) and musical supervision, additional material and arrangements by Martin Koch. Mamma Mia! continues to play to sell-out crowds at Broadway's Winter Garden Theatre. The international hit also plays London, Sydney, Hamburg and Tokyo as well as two U.S. tours. Song titles include "Dancing Queen," "Knowing Me, Knowing You," "Money, Money, Money," "S.O.S.," "The Name of the Game" and "The Winner Takes it All."
Mamma Mia! is produced in Canada by Judy Craymer, Richard East and Björn Ulvaeus for Littlestar in association with Universal and David & Ed Mirvish. Once this all-Canadian cast production completes its Vancouver engagement, Mamma Mia! will resume performances on Sept. 30, 2003 at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto.
Tickets for the Vancouver run will go on sale June 23. Call (604) 280-4444 for tickets. Visit www.mamma-mia.com for more information.
