News Exotic Couple, Hassan and Sylvia, Will Lure Isolated Man Into the Light at Cherry Lane Hassan and Sylvia, Manuel Igrejas' new play about a gay man's immersion into a strange nightclub after the death of his lover, will premiere July 14-17 at The Cherry Lane Studio Theater in Manhattan.

The play, presented as part of the Fresh Fruit Festival, will be directed by David Hilder. The cast includes John Wernke, Karin de la Penha, Vandit Bhatt, Casey Burden, Erik Kever Ryle and Marilyn Bernard. According to the producers, "Our hero is a thirtysomething gay man reeling from the sudden death of his longtime lover and the home they shared. After months of isolation, he makes his first venture into the world and goes to a nightclub to hear an old friend sing. There he meets an exotic couple — a dashing, young Arabic man and a glamorous older woman, Hassan and Sylvia — who surround him with their charms. Along for the ride is their driver, Jimmy, who has more than traffic on his mind, and Velma, a foul-mouthed bag lady who may or may not know exactly what's going on. This mysterious quartet draws our hero into a spicy soup from which he may or may not emerge in one piece."

Igrejas' previous plays include Miss Mary Dugan and Kitty and Lina. He is the longtime publicist for Blue Man Group, STREB, Richard Foreman and Peak Performances, among others.

The Cherry Lane Studio Theater is located at 38 Commerce Street in Greenwich Village. For tickets, call (212) 352-3501.
