The Newsies alum takes us inside his new DUMBO neighborhood, and shows us how he’s been spending his summer.
Andrew Keenan-Bolger is officially a Brooklyn boy. A new resident of the borough, the Newsies star lived in New York for more than 15 years before visiting DUMBO, the waterfront neighborhood where he presently resides. His recent move to the community marks his first time as a Brooklynite, and with that comes plenty of opportunity to explore the neighborhood.
“That’s what I love about New York: you think you’ve seen it all, and then there is some neighborhood you haven’t discovered,” he gushes. Accompanied by his dog Archie, who is wearing a matching bandanna, the star is energetic and confident as we walk through the beautiful streets of DUMBO, playing with his puppy along the way. Despite the newness of the neighborhood, Keenan-Bolger seems like he’s right at home.
Though Keenan-Bolger now lives outside of Manhattan, the theatre veteran still relishes Broadway in the summer. “I think there is something ceremonial about sitting in an air-conditioned theatre, watching live theatre during the summer,” he explains. “I’ve done a lot of theatre for young audiences, and Broadway is such a great destination for parents to take their kids during the summer when they need an activity. You get some of your best audiences. I love performing in the summer on Broadway.”
As the musical prepares for its closing night, we asked five cast members—Will Roland, George Salazar, Lauren Marcus, Katlyn Carlson, and Jason SweetTooth Williams—a series of questions about their experiences along the show's journey from New Jersey to Broadway.
