Suggested by "Faust" by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the show has book, music and lyrics by John Mercurio. It's conceived and developed by Andrew Kato. Music direction is by Alexander Rovang (Fame international tour).
Here's how York, known for its mission to stage classic and new musicals in an intimate setting, bills Academy: It's "a pop chamber musical about growing up and remaining true to oneself. At St. Edward's Academy, two senior students make a wager as to whether or not they can influence a new unsuspecting freshman to break a few rules to succeed. Academy has been the winner of many accolades, including the DIMF International Award for Best Musical, the NYMF and Cole Porter Award for Score and an NEA grant."
Each year, York's Developmental Reading Series presents between 30 to 40 readings and workshops of new musicals by emerging and established authors. Associate artistic director Brian Blythe said in a statement, "These readings give writers a unique opportunity to get audience feedback while a show is still in progress."
York's past Mainstage productions of Yank!, Souvenir and The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!) were first developed in the Developmental Reading Series, where the Tony Award-winning Broadway hit Avenue Q also made its first appearances.
York's home is at The Theatre at St. Peter's at 54th Street just east of Lexington. For reservations, visit www.yorktheatre.org.
