PlayBlog Fela's Legacy Lives Through His Son The music of late Afrobeat artist Fela Kuti, whose story is rocking Broadway in the new musical Fela!, is currently featured in the new PBS online series "Sound Tracks."


The new series, now available online, is dedicated to tracing the unheard stories of how music, people and culture intersect throughout the world. As part of the series, journalist Marco Werman traveled to Nigeria to cover Fela's legacy.

Werman interviews Fela's son, Suen Kuti, who at the age of 14 stepped in to lead his father's band Egypt 80 following Fela's death from AIDS in 1997. "The music is the legacy," Seun said in the interview. "To respect Fela, and if we’re going to play his music, we have to realize that this music has to be for some kind of change, part of some kind of positive movement."
