Claire Trevor, the film actress of "Key Largo," "Dead End" and "The High and the Mighty," died April 8 in a hospital in Southern California after an illness, according to The New York Times. Ms. Trevor, who was born Claire Wemlinger in Brooklyn in 1909 or 1910, studied briefly at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and performed in theaters in St. Louis and Michigan.

She appeared in the Broadway plays Whistling in the Dark and The Party's Over before her movie career began in 1933. She returned to Broadway in 1947, in a comedy called The Big Two.

In 1948, she won an Academy Award for "Key Largo." She was also Oscar nominated for "Dead End" and "The High and the Mighty."
