Contact creator Susan Stroman will begin filming of a movie version of the Tony-winning dance piece in June 2003, the director-choreographer told the Times of London.

Contact recently opened in the West End.

Librettist John Weidman will write the adaptation and Laurence Mark will produce the USA Films flick. Filming was originally set to begin in late 2002 in New York City. The film will mark Stroman's debut as a movie director. Stroman declined to comment on casting.

Earlier, Variety reported that the movie of Contact would focus on the last section (also called Contact) of the three-tiered production. In that longest segment, a successful, but suicidal ad exec encounters love and perhaps fulfillment in the person of a mysterious Girl in the Yellow Dress, who dances nightly at a downtown Manhattan hall. Contact's other two sections, Swinging and Did You Move?, will be incorporated into this overall framework.

Contact won a Tony Award for Best Musical in 2000, angering many theatre purists who objected to the fact that the show contained no original score and no vocal performances. Stroman is currently represented on Broadway by The Producers, which she directed and choreographed.
