For Stories on 5 Stories, the pieces will be played in "non-traditional, behind-the-scenes locations throughout the theatre's five-story headquarters," in such spots as a ladies room, the kitchen and reception area.
The roster of writers, all veterans of Playwrights Horizons, includes PH veterans Christopher Durang, William Finn, Peter Hedges, Kenneth Lonergan, Lynn Nottage, Nicky Silver, Wendy Wasserstein and Doug Wright. Each of the seven playlets (and one song, by William Finn) — written especially for this event — will be about five minutes in length. Additional casting will be announced.
Playwrights Horizons's artistic director Tim Sanford and managing director Leslie Marcus announced that the event will be annual.
The pieces are "inspired by and performed in one location" of the theatre company's five-story building on West 42nd Street. The theme for this year's plays is "Haunted."
The plays "will be performed concurrently, each repeated eight times in its own location," according to PH. "Attendees will travel throughout the building in small groups in order to see each work, and each will be performed by separate casts." In a statement, Sanford said, "Playwrights Horizons' community of artists and supporters remains understandably euphoric about its new performing spaces, which have been open to audiences for over a year and a half now. But we are also proud of our behind-the-scenes spaces: our offices, rehearsal spaces and other workspaces. We thought it would be fun to invite eight notable writers from our artistic family to celebrate our entire new home by writing short plays to be performed by a small company of wonderful, game actors in Playwrights Horizons' backrooms."
The schedule for Stories on 5 Stories will be as follows:
The event is strictly limited to 240 people. All net proceeds from the event will benefit the theatre's annual programs and productions.
