Elke Neidhard's production took four years to assemble, as costs rose from an estimated A$11 million to A$15.3 million. The set, designed by Michael Scott-Mitchell, includes massive fountains of water and jets of flame.
The first of three complete cycles of Das Rheingold, Die Walk‹re, Siegfried, and G‹tterd‹mmerung runs through Monday, November 22. Additional cycles will be performed from November 26 through December 2 and from December 6 though December 12. No additional performances of the production are currently planned.
The Australian soprano Lisa Gasteen, who plays Br‹nnhilde, is the biggest name in the production. John Br‹cheler is Wotan; John Wegner is Alberich; Timothy Mussard is Siegfried; Deborah Riedel plays Sieglinde. The Adelaide Symphony accompanies the performances; Asher Fisch, the music director of the Israeli Opera, is the conductor.
