The New York Times reports that Fitzgerald was let go from the production for "handling another actor, Geraldine Hughes, too roughly during a scene in which he physically confronts her." A statement that was released by the production said, "[Mr. Fitzgerald] failed to heed written notes from stage management to cease uncalled for harsh physical contact."

The role of Doalty will now be played by Fitzgerald's understudy, Jeremy Bobb. The limited engagement of the Manhattan Theatre Club production ends Sunday, March 11.

Translations marked the Broadway debut for actor Fitzgerald, who has also been seen in productions of The Importance of Being Earnest, Homeland, Drama at Inish and The Plough and the Stars, all at the Abbey. His screen credits include "The Tiger's Tail" and "Pure Mule." Fitzgerald received his B.A. in Drama and Theatre Studies at Trinity College Dublin.

Jeremy Bobb is also making his Broadway debut in Translations. His recent New York credits include Calamity of Kat Kat and Willie, Love: A Tragic Etude, Murder in the First and Hell and Back. He received his BFA from Otterbein College.

Translations, Brian Friel's dense, haunted romance about language, boundaries, political might and personal fascination with new worlds, officially opened on Broadway Jan. 25 in a fresh production by Manhattan Theatre Club. Tony Award winner Garry Hynes (The Beauty Queen of Leenane) directs the staging, which is presented in association with New Jersey's McCarter Theatre, where the production appeared last fall.

According to MTC, "Clashing cultures and tragedies of miscommunication unfold in Friel's invented Irish county of Ballybeg, a place he has explored in his plays Dancing at Lughnasa, Aristocrats and Molly Sweeney. Poignant and moving, Translations depicts the power of language to unite and divide people in a time of cultural imperialism." The cast also includes Niall Buggy, David Costabile, Alan Cox, Dermot Crowley, Morgan Hallett, Geraldine Hughes, Susan Lynch, Graeme Malcolm and Chandler Williams.

The design team for Translations includes Francis O'Connor (set and costume), Davy Cunningham (lighting), John Leonard (sound) and Sam Jackson (original music).
