Douglas Carter Beane’s Broadway-aimed Hood: The Robin Hood Musical Adventure—which made its world premiere this past summer at Dallas Theatre Center, Texas’ Tony-winning regional theatre—won the top prize from the Dallas-Fort Worth Critics Forum Awards when it was named Outstanding New Play or Musical by the association earlier this week. The show had also been nominated for Outstanding Ensemble.
The voters consist of nine Texas theatre critics: Alexandra Bonifield, CriticalRant.com; Nancy Churnin, The Dallas Morning News; Jan Farrington, TheaterJones.com; Janice Franklin, TheaterJones.com; Martha Heimberg, TheaterJones.com and Dallas Weekly; Arnold Wayne Jones, Dallas Voice; Mark Lowry, TheaterJones.com and Fort Worth Star-Telegram; Punch Shaw, Fort Worth Star-Telegram; and Lindsey Wilson, CultureMap.
The musical comes from husband-and-husband writing team with a book written by Beane and a score written by Lewis Flinn; Beane also directed the production. Beane made his Broadway debut with his original comedy The Little Dog Laughed in 2006, followed by Xanadu, Sister Act, Lysistrata Jones, Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, and The Nance. He was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play for Little Dog Laughed and also earned Tony nominations for the books of each of the aforementioned musicals. Flinn provided original music for Little Dog Laughed and wrote the score to Lysistrata Jones; he earned a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Music in a Play for The Tribute Artist in 2014.
Hood starred Nick Bailey as Robin Hood alongside Alysha Umphress (On the Town) as Meg, Ashley Park (Sunday in the Park with George) as Marian, Tiana Kaye Johnson as Lady Jane, Billie Aken-Tyers as Much, Ricco Fajardo as Gamble Gold, Ian Ferguson as Alan A’Dale, Austin Scott as Sheriff of Nottingham, Beth Lipton as Lady Anne, Luke Longacre as Little John, Chris Ramirez as Friar Tuck, and Jacob ben Widmar as Will Scarlett.
Tony Award winner John Lee Beatty provided scenic design with costume design by Gregory Gale, sound design by Tony winner John Shivers, lighting design by Philip Rosenberg, choreography by Joseph Pizzi and Robert Bianca, music direction and supervision by Brad Simmons, and puppet design by James Ortiz (The Woodsman).
