As of May 9, the only confirmed North American life for Flashdance — The Musical is a national tour that launches Jan. 1-6, 2013, at Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh,a spokesman for the tour confirmed. Pittsburgh is the setting for the story of a lady steelworker with a passion for dance. No casting has been announced.

John Karastamatis, a spokesman for Mirvish Productions in Toronto, characterized the Ontario change as a "postponement" of the Canadian premiere of the pop-rock tale. It is now expected to play the 2013-14 season in Toronto, he said.

"We remain excited about our production of Flashdance with Sergio Trujillo at the helm as director and choreographer, but unfortunately we'll need to postpone it [for] Toronto audiences until the following season," Broadway producer Marc Routh said in a statement forwarded by the Toronto presenter.

This is second scotching of Toronto dates for a pre-Broadway musical in the past six months. The musical retrospective Prince of Broadway, spotlighting the groundbreaking musical theatre work of director-producer Harold Prince, was to play a tryout in Toronto, but producers opted to bring it directly to New York. The show has since lost its lead producer (Toronto's Aubrey Dan), but new producers are being lined up and an announcement is forthcoming

Flashdance – The Musical, the stage adaptation of the 1983 pop-filled hit film, premiered in London in 2010. Its book, songs and staging will be reworked for North America, where it will play more than 25 markets. Additional cities and tour casting will be announced in the coming months.

Directed and choreographed by Trujillo (Jersey Boys, Memphis, The Addams Family), Flashdance features a book by Robert Cary and Tom Hedley (co-writer of the original screenplay with Joe Eszterhas), music by Robbie Roth and lyrics by Robert Cary and Robbie Roth.

Here's how producers previously characterized the story: "Flashdance tells the unforgettable story of Alex Owens, a working-class girl from Pittsburgh striving to make her dreams of becoming a professional dancer a reality. She works by day at a steel mill, where she catches the eye of her boss Nick Hurley. By night she works as a 'flashdancer' at a local bar but longs to become a student at the prestigious Shipley Dance Academy."

The Paramount Pictures film had an international gross of $150 million. The Grammy Award-winning soundtrack featured the hits "Gloria," "Manhunt," "Maniac," "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" and the Academy Award-winning theme "Flashdance - What a Feeling." All of these songs are included in Flashdance – The Musical, plus more than ten new songs penned by Cary and Roth.

The national tour of Flashdance is produced by NETworks Presentations LLC, Steven Baruch, Tom Viertel, Marc Routh, Richard Frankel, Christopher Malcolm, David Ian Productions and Transamerica.
