Polly Bergen, now rehearsing as Carlotta Campion in the Roundabout revival of James Goldman-Stephen Sondheim's Follies (singing "I'm Still Here"), appears at the Firebird Cafe on Jan. 28 to sing another of her favorites, Jeff Franzel and Amy Power's song, "He's Not Mr. Right, But He's Mr. Right Now."
Bergen's performance of "Mr. Right Now" coincides with composer Franzel's scheduled stint in a special three-month Sunday night performance series at the Firebird Cafe sponsored by ASCAP.
As reported earlier, Bergen, who interpreted numerous Sondheim songs during her recent engagement at Feinstein's, has also had success with the Franzel/Powers number in concert. Her appearance at the Firebird during Franzel's engagement is said to reflect her appreciation for the song, which has become a highlight of her own show.
The ASCAP/Firebird Pop Songwriter Series follows a similar series for cabaret artists, and is aimed at focusing "public attention on deserving new and established singer-songwriters in the pop, R&B, rock and folk field"
The scheduled performers are as follows: Jan. 28-Jeff Franzel; Feb. 4- Eszter Balint; Feb. 18-Seth Glass; Feb. 25-Sylvia Tosun; March 4-Mark Lambert; March 11-Miranda Hentoff; March 18-Tina DeVaron; and March 25-Willie Nile. There will be a cover charge at the Firebird Café, which is located at 363 W. 46 St. (between Eighth and Ninth Avenues) in Manhattan. Reservations must be made at (212) 586-0244.
