Fosse is the top musical and The Iceman Cometh the leading play in the 1998-99 Outer Critics Circle theatre awards nominations. Both shows received eight noms a piece. The Civil War, which will compete with Fosse for the best musical prize, came in third with seven nods.

The Outer Critics Circle comprises writers who cover New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers and media. The group's nominations are traditionally the first of the New York theatre awards season (though the Lucille Lortel Awards were announced April 6), which culminates with the Tonys Awards in early June. The winners of the awards will be announced April 26 and the prizes bestowed at a May 28 ceremony at Sardi's.

The nominees for best Broadway play are three British offerings -- David Hare's Amy's View, Patrick Marber's Closer and Conor McPherson's The Weir -- and Tennessee Williams' belatedly performed early work, Not About Nightingales. Competing for best Off-Broadway play are David Marshall Grant's Snakebit, Diana Son's Stop Kiss, Paula Vogel's The Mineola Twins and Margaret Edson's Wit.

The best musical category was filled out with nods for Parade and, curiously, the Matthew Bourne interpretation of the classic ballet Swan Lake.
