Joshua Carlebach penned the treatment of the classic gothic tale, about a young doctor who creates a living creature that eventually destroys him. The Flying Machine will employ its typical mix of mime, dance, music, puppets and props in the production. The show was developed during a July 24–26, 2003, workshop.
The Flying Machine last visited Soho Rep's Tribeca space in fall 2003, with Signals of Distress. The play was based on a novel by Jim Crace about a bunch of shipwrecked Americans stranded in a small village on the isolated northern coast of England in 1830.
Other Flying Machine shows seen at Soho Rep include The Escapist (1999) and Archipelago (2001).
Soho Rep has not yet announced a second play for their 2004-05 season.
