Classic Arts News   Frankfurt Opera Music Director Paolo Carignani to Step Down

Paolo Carignani, the music director of Frankfurt Opera since 1999, will leave his post in 2008, the Associated Press reports.

According to the AP, Carignani is credited with helping the company recover from artistic and financial problems.

Petra Roth, the mayor of Frankfurt, said she was saddened and surprised by the popular conductor's decision to leave, but appreciated that he had given general director Bernd Loebe sufficient time to search for a new conductor.

The German media speculated that Carignani stepped down because of "scheming" at the company, the AP notes, but he would say only that "there is also intrigue at supermarkets, banks, and stock markets."
