The Philadephia Theatre Company production of the Tony Award-nominated show by Doug Wright (book), Scott Frankel (music) and Michael Korie (lyrics) will also feature Todd Almond as Gould, Cole Burden as Joe/Jerry, Kim Carson as Young Edie, Maggie Fitzgerald as Young Jackie, James William Ijames as Brooks, John Jellison as Maj. Bouvier/Norman Vincent Peale and Anastasia Korbal as Young Lee.
Performances play PTC's home, the Suzanne Roberts Theatre (Broad and Lombard Streets). Opening night is May 27.
Resnik, a major name in Chicago theatre, played Edie in Northlight Theatre's production of Grey Gardens. The role was created on Broadway by Christine Ebersole, who won the Best Actress Tony Award for the role (dual role, really, since she played Edith in Act One and her middle-aged daughter, Edie, in Act Two).
According to PTC, "Grey Gardens blends humor, heartache and humanity as it follows the deliciously eccentric lives of the reclusive Little Edie Beale and her mother Edith Bouvier Beale — the aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. Set at the Grey Gardens mansion in tony East Hampton, the two Edies slip from their status as wealthy socialites to penniless hermits in their dilapidated home."
The musical is inspired by a 1975 film documentary that became a cult hit. It inspired not only the musical, but a 2009 non-musical HBO film, "Grey Gardens," starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore. That picture is currently playing on the cable network. Peterson is the recipient of the Obie Award for her direction of Buckinghamshire and two Drama Desk nominations for The Waves, both at New York Theatre Workshop. She directed the world premieres of The Batting Cage; July 7, 1994; Tough Choices for the New Century; Slavs!; and Trip's Cinch, all at Actors Theatre of Louisville's Humana Festival and The Scarlet Letter at CSC.
Franz was most recently seen in the world premiere of Hats at Denver Theatre Center. Her Broadway credits include starring roles in Into the Woods, Pippin, A Little Night Music and Company. She has performed at Paper Mill Playhouse, Great Barrington Stage, Cincinnati Playhouse, Goodspeed Opera and Missouri Repertory Theatre.
Resnik won three Joseph Jefferson Awards in Chicago for Best Actress in a Musical for A Little Night Music, Into the Woods and House of Martin Guerre, as well as the Sarah Siddons Leading Lady Award for Piaf. She starred in the national tours of Les Miserables, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Thoroughly Modern Millie.
The Grey Gardens creative team includes Ryan Rummery (sound designer), Jorge Cousineau (projections designer), David Zinn (set and costume designer) and Matthew Richards (lighting designer).
