It's lasted longer than a month in Los Angeles, but the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble's production of Irish playwright Brian Friel's adaptation of Ivan Turgenev's A Month in the Country will close Aug. 6. Performances began June 24. Director Dorothy Lyman has transposed the play from 19th-century Russia to contemporary suburban America.

Friel, one of Ireland's foremost playwrights, was provided by Christopher Heanery with a literal translation of Turgenev's 1850 comedy-drama. From this he composed a free version. "In places it may not be reverent to the original but nowhere, I hope, is it unfaithful to its spirit," Friel said.

Lyman directed Music Down From the Hill at the Odyssey in 1994. An award-winning actress, director and playwright, she directed 75 episodes of "The Nanny" for CBS. She presently has two films in development and a first-look deal at ChickFlicks.

Appearing in the ensemble cast of A Month in the Country are Blake Boyd, Brian Caspe, Mimi Cozzens, Van Epperson, Stan Kirsch, Jennifer Kwantes, Stephanie Nash, Jim Petersmith, Fred Russell, Carl Schlander, Jill Marie Simon and Steward Skelton.

Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located at 2055 S. Sepulveda Blvd. For tickets and information call (310) 477- 2055. -- By Willard Manus
