News   FringeNYC Honors 2001 Winners and Sets 2002 Festival for Aug. 9-25 As the end of August nears, so ends the summer season, but not before the New York International Fringe Festival announced its winners for the FringeNYC Overall Excellence Awards.

As the end of August nears, so ends the summer season, but not before the New York International Fringe Festival announced its winners for the FringeNYC Overall Excellence Awards.

This year the festival proudly touted its first grand-scale success story in the Broadway production of Urinetown: The Musical (which began performances Aug. 27). The comic musical premiered in the fringe fest in 1999. This year's winners hope to share the same success.

The Overall Excellence Award winners, who were honored at the Aug. 26 ceremony at the Westbeth Theatre Center in Manhattan, were chosen by a panel of 70 theatre professionals. The winners were:

At the Aug. 26 ceremony, John Clancy announced his resignation as artistic director of both FringeNYC and The Present Company. Elena K. Holy, producing director of The Present Company and FringeNYC will take over as producing artistic director for 2001-2002.
