“We’re both a little quirky in real life,” admits Caissie Levy, who plays Queen Elsa opposite Patti Murin’s Princess Anna. “Both of us keep going, ‘We’re Disney princesses!’ because I don’t think either of us thought that we would be shoo-ins for that world, and the way Disney has been portraying women in the last 10 to 15 years is so up our alley as people.”

That “quirkiness” that Levy describes plays into Murin’s perception of her character. “I call [Anna] a bit of a hot mess princess,” Murin says, “which is truly why when I saw it, I was like, ‘That’s me. I’m just a hot mess princess.’”

Following the Denver production, Frozen will land on Broadway at the St. James Theatre in spring 2018. The musical promises to take a deeper dive into the world depicted in the 2013 animated feature, including new songs from Oscar-winning husband-and-wife team Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.

Audiences will have to wait to see what new material awaits, but director Michael Grandage assures they’ll be awe-inspiring: “That’s our job: to create lots of moments that take your breath away because you didn’t know they were coming.”
