News Garbo and Me Reading to Feature Shindle, McGillin, Abramovitz and Zagnit The York Theatre Company's Developmental Reading Series will continue Sept. 17 with a free reading of the new musical Garbo and Me.

Directed by Andy Sandberg, the 3 PM reading will boast the talents of Kate Shindle as legendary film icon Greta Garbo and two-time Tony Award nominee Howard McGillin as matinee idol John Gilbert with Jill Abramovitz as gossip columnist Louella Parsons and Stuart Zagnit as movie mogul Louis B. Mayer.

The company will also include Niffer Clarke, Frank Galgano, Jeff Hiller, Herndon Lackey, Vanessa Lemonides, Drama Desk nominee Orville Mendoza, April Ortiz, Felicia Ricci and Jeff Skowron.

Garbo and Me features book and lyrics by Joanne Sydney Lessner and music and lyrics by Joshua Rosenblum. The musical, according to press notes, is described as such: "In her dramatic journey from Swedish schoolgirl to Hollywood legend to New York recluse, Greta Garbo kept the world in her thrall. But behind her glamorous screen persona was an insecure country girl yearning for the snows of her homeland and the one true love she left behind. . . . [Garbo and Me] traces the elusive film icon as she conquers the studio system, negotiates the tabloid minefield, and juggles a string of lovers, both male and female, while struggling to protect her cherished privacy."

The reading will be presented at the York's home at The Theatre at Saint Peter's on 54th Street, east of Lexington Avenue.
