Baroness Genista McIntosh is to leave the National Theatre, where she is chief executive and therefore Trevor Nunn's most senior colleague, next spring.
She has left the National once before, when in 1997 she moved to the Royal Opera House, but after less than sixth months she resigned and subsequently returned to the South Bank.
It is not currently known what her future plans are, but her departure will give Nicholas Hytner (who succeeds Trevor Nunn in 2003) a say in the new appointment and thus help him make his mark some time before he officially takes over.
