New Yiddish Rep has announced that Israeli film actor Gera Sandler, whose credits include Jellyfish, A Film Unfinished, and A Tale Of Love And Darkness, has joined the cast of the Yiddish world premiere of Rhinoceros this fall. The revival of Eugene Ionesco’s absurdist comedy is set to begin Off-Broadway September 7.

Sandler will play the role of Dudard. The cast of Rhinoceros also features Alec Burko, Amy Coleman, Macha Fogel, Sean Griffin, Malky Goldman, Chezky Israeli, Caraid O’Brien, David Mandelbaum, Eli Rosen, Luzer Twersky, and Melissa Weisz.

The Yiddish staging, translated by Eli Rosen and directed by Moshe Yassur, will be at the Castillo Theatre. The production will be performed in Yiddish with English supertitles through October 8, with an official opening night on September 14.

In the allegorical Rhinoceros, Ionesco blends absurdity and the ridiculous to provide biting commentary on the human condition and one’s need to “follow the herd.” The story follows a man named Berenger who watches all of the citizens of his small town turn into rhinoceroses. The play premiered on Broadway in 1961, awarding Zero Mostel his first of three Tony Awards.
