Manhattan Theatre Club is gearing up for the world premiere of John Patrick Shanley’s newest play, The Portuguese Kid, a feisty new romantic comedy that will open Off-Broadway this fall. The story follows the could-it-be relationship between Barry, a second-rate lawyer from Providence, played by Seinfeld star Jason Alexander, and habitual widow Atlanta, played by three-time Tony nominee Sherie Rene Scott.
Watch the two stars, who are joined by playwright and director Shanley, chat about the show in the exclusive video above.
The world premiere of The Portuguese Kid will begin performances September 19 at MTC’s New York City Center Stage I. Rounding out the cast are Aimee Carrero, Drama Desk winner Mary Testa, and Pico Alexander.
Directed by Shanley, The Portuguese Kid will officially open October 24
“This larger-than-life Greek tightwad quickly becomes a nightmare for her cheesy, self-aggrandizing attorney,” read production notes from MTC. “Add Barry's impossible Croatian mother, a dash of current politics and a couple of opportunistic young lovers, and you have in hand a recipe for comic combustion.”
Shanley is the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Doubt and Outside Mullingar, as well as the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Moonstruck.
