Due to popular demand, the show, in which three versatile actors play 15 different roles in five different restaurant settings, will be repeated with the summer cast and band Sept. 21-Oct. 10 on the intimate Geva Nextstage in Rochester, NY. People were turned away at the door due to sold-out houses this summer.
According to production notes, Five-Course Love depicts "five hysterical scenes in five different style restaurants. The style of each restaurant dictates the music the actors sing, so when Matt and Barbie show up in a down-home rib joint, you can bet the honky-tonk music is coming right up. Later, Gino, Sofia and Carlo have an impassioned, 'Sopranos'-esque encounter in an Italian restaurant; two Mexican brothers praise the beauty of the bonita Rosalinda; and Kitty dons her bobby socks and dreams of malt shop love. Five-Course Love charts love attempted, love gone bad, love mismatched, love misguided, love denied and, inevitably, love achieved."
Emma Griffin, artistic director of New York City's Salt Theatre, directed Five-Course Love.
The June cast included John Bolton (Broadway's Contact), Heather Ayers (Forbidden Broadway) and Jeff Gurner (The Lion King on Broadway).
The creative team includes Terry Berliner (choreographer), G.W. Mercier (scenic and costume design), Annie Wrightson (lighting design), Lindsay Jones (sound design), David Labman (musical director). Coffin's musical Convenience premiered on Geva's Nextstage in 2000 and moved to the Mainstage in 2003. Convenience is published by Dramatist Play Service and has enjoyed successful productions at Sacramento Theatre Company, Human Race Theatre in Ohio and Houston's Stages. It is slated for production at Kansas City's Unicorn Theatre in the coming year.
