News Gilbert & Sullivan in Brief(s), a New Musical Poking Operetta Archetypes in the Eye, Caps Queens Theatre Season The song catalog of Victorian operetta masters W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan gets a comic airing in the world-premiere musical entertainment Gilbert & Sullivan in Brief(s), playing June 21-July 1 at Queens Theatre in New York City.

Written and directed by Queens Theatre executive director Ray Cullon, the "musical farce" celebrates the works of composer Sullivan and lyricist Gilbert. Expect a "laugh-out-loud night of pirates and sailors, modern major generals and damsels in distress" — think of it as Gilbert & Sullivan merged with "Saturday Night Live" as "four archetypal characters — a pompous Tenor (Matthew Thompson); a ditsy Soprano (Carolann Sanita); a past-her-prime Mezzo (Kate Chapman); an inebriated Baritone (Parker Andrews) — take audiences on a madcap musical race through all 14 of the duo's operettas, from the well-known — The Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore, The Mikado — to the obscure — Princess Ida, anyone?"

The dates at the not-for-profit venue in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, precede a three-week summer run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. (This is the final title in Queens Theatre's 2011-12 season, which included the world premiere of the Jack Cole dance revue Heat Wave.)

Gilbert & Sullivan in Brief(s) plays Thursday, June 21 through Sunday, July 1 with performances Wednesday through Friday at 7:30 PM and Saturday at 8 PM with matinees on Wednesday and Saturday at 2 PM and Sunday at 3 PM.

Tickets are priced at $42 for weekday performances and $49 for weekend performances.

Tickets are on sale now at the Queens Theatre Box Office, by phone at (718) 760-0064 and online at queenstheatre.org. *

Queens Theatre is located at 14 United Nations Avenue South in Flushing Meadows Corona Park (directly under the iconic towers of the New York State Pavilion) and is easily accessible by car, bus or subway.
