Pam MacKinnon, who earned a Tony Award for the 2012 Broadway revival of Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, will stage A Delicate Balance, which begins previews Oct. 20 at the Golden Theatre, currently home to the Terrence McNally drama Mothers and Sons.

A Delicate Balance will officially open Nov. 20 for a limited, 18-week engagement through Feb. 22, 2015. This production marks the third Broadway production of the play.

Here's how the play is billed: "Agnes (Close) and Tobias (Lithgow), a long-married couple, must maintain their equilibrium as over the course of a weekend they welcome home their 36-year-old daughter (Plimpton) after the collapse of her fourth marriage, and give shelter to their best friends (Balaban and Higgins), all the while tolerating Agnes’ alcoholic sister Claire (Duncan)."

The revival will have scenic design by Santo Loquasto, costume design by Ann Roth and lighting design by Brian MacDevitt.

The play marks Close's first New York stage return since winning a Tony Award for Sunset Boulevard in 1995. She has also earned Tony Awards for Death and the Maiden and The Real Thing. She is a six-time Academy Award nominee for her performances in "The World According to Garp," "The Big Chill," "The Natural," "Fatal Attraction," "Dangerous Liaisons" and "Albert Nobbs." Lithgow, who will star in King Lear this summer for Shakespeare in the Park, has won Tony Awards for his performances in The Changing Room and Sweet Smell of Success. He received Academy Award nominations for "The World According to Garp" and "Terms Of Endearment."

Duncan is a Tony Award winner for Private Lives and earned a Tony nomination for Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Her London stage credits include Hay Fever, That Face, Mouth to Mouth, The Homecoming, The Cryptogram, Three Hotels, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, among others.

Balaban is a Tony nominee for The Inspector General and has appeared in Plaza Suite and Speed-the-Plow. His films include "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Moonrise Kingdom," "Capote," "Waiting for Guffman," among others.

Higgins is a three-time Olivier Award winner for Sweet Bird of Youth, Hecuba and Vincent in Brixton, a performance she repeated on Broadway.

Plimpton recently starred in the London premiere of Other Desert Cities. She last appeared on the New York Stage in Pal Joey, for which she earned a Tony nomination. Her stage credits include Top Girls, The Coast of Utopia and Hobson's Choice. She stars on the Fox series "Raising Hope."

The original Tony-nominated 1966 production starred Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn, while the 1973 film starred Katharine Hepburn, Paul Scofield and Lee Remick. A 1996 Broadway revival of A Delicate Balance, starring Rosemary Harris, Elaine Stritch and George Grizzard, was a critical and popular success, winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play.
