Classic Arts News Glimmerglass Opera's 2008 Season to Have Shakespearean Theme Glimmerglass Opera will focus on opera based on Shakespeare for its 2008 season, which runs July 5 to August 24, 2008, in the Alice Busch Opera Theater in Cooperstown, New York. The four productions, all new to the company, will be staged on a single set, designed by Glimmerglass associate artistic director John Conklin to depict an Elizabethan theater.
The operas selected for Glimmerglass 2008 include Wagner's early work Das Liebesverbot ("Forbidden Love"), based on Measure for Measure and receiving its North American premiere; Handel's Giulio Cesare in Egitto (not based on the Shakespeare tragedy but featuring some of the same characters); Cole Porter's Kiss Me, Kate, based on The Taming of the Shrew; and Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi, based on Romeo and Juliet.

Casting and production details for the 2008 season at Glimmerglass Opera will be announced later this year. For more information on the company's 2007 season, inspired by the myth of Orpheus, visit www.glimmerglass.org.
