MCC Theater celebrated the opening of Jocelyn Bioh’s play School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play Off-Broadway November 16. The world premiere, directed by Tony winner Rebecca Taichman, marks the professional playwriting debut of playwright and actor Bioh.

School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play takes place at an exclusive boarding school in Ghana, where Paulina (MaameYaa Boafo) is queen bee. Her reign is threatened by the mid-year arrival of Ericka (Nabiiyah Be), who catches the attention of her peers and a pageant recruiter. The play explores themes of beauty, colorism, and adolescence.

Performances began November 1 in the Lucille Lortel Theatre.
