The musical adaptation of Tootsie, featuring a score by The Band’s Visit Tony winner David Yazbek and book by Robert Horn, officially opened on Broadway April 23 at the Marquis Theatre. Directed by Scott Ellis and choreographed by Denis Jones, the new musical arrives in New York following an out-of-town engagement at Chicago’s Cadillac Theatre last fall.

Tony nominee Santino Fontana leads the cast as Michael Dorsey, a struggling actor who lands a job under the female persona of Dorothy Michaels. The cast also includes Lilli Cooper as Julie Nichols, Sarah Stiles as Sandy Lester, John Behlmann as Max Von Horn, Andy Grotelueschen as Jeff Slater, Julie Halston as Rita Marshall, Michael McGrath as Stan Fields, and Reg Rogers as Ron Carlisle.

The cast also features Sissy Bell, Barry Busby, Paula Leggett Chase, Britney Coleman, Leslie Donna Flesner, Jenifer Foote, John Arthur Greene, Drew King, Jeff Kready, Harris Milgrim, Adam Monley, Shina Ann Morris, James Moye, Katerina Papacostas, Nick Spangler, Diana Vaden, and Anthony Wayne.

Broadway previews of Tootsie began March 29.

The creative team includes scenic designer David Rockwell, costume designer William Ivey Long, lighting designer Donald Holder, sound designer Brian Ronan, hair and wig designer Paul Huntley, and make-up designer Angelina Avallone. Casting is by Jim Carnahan C.S.A. Music supervision is by Andrea Grody and Dean Sharenow.

Tootsie is produced by Scott Sanders Productions and co-produced by James L. Nederlander and Sally Horchow.
