The new musical The Celebrated, Scandalous, Heroic, Misadventures of Tom Jones, with music by Larry Grossman (Paper Moon) and book and lyrics by the late James Goldman (Lion in Winter), will be workshopped in New York City in late June. Ted Pappas has been mentioned as director, and Edgar Dobie (The Adventures of Tom Sawyer) and Bobby Goldman are producing. Casting is underway. The show, which is based on the famous British novel by Henry Fielding, had a reading in April 1999 at the Roundabout Theatre Company. Michael Mayer was then on board as director.
At the time of his death in October 1998, James Goldman had recently completed the screenplay of "Tolstoy" and the libretto for Tom Jones.
