The 10th annual Goodspeed Festival of New Musicals, produced by Goodspeed Musicals' Max Showalter Center for Education in Musical Theatre, is held Jan. 16-18 at the Goodspeed Opera House.

The Festival features a staged reading of Alexander Sage Oyen and James Presson's Outlaws, a new Americana-infused musical inspired by the rise and fall of infamous outlaw, robber and murderer Jesse James; Christopher Dimond 
and Michael Kooman's musical comedy The Noteworthy Life of Howard Barnes; and the indie-rock/folk musical For Tonight, which explores the indelible power of home.

"Ever wonder what it takes to write a musical? WNPR's Colin McEnroe will host a conversation with the writing teams represented in this year's Festival, along with a team currently writing-in-residence at Goodspeed and Festival favorites Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich (upcoming production of Ever After at Papermill and Goodspeed's The Great American Mousical). Learn first-hand about the challenges of writing a new musical and be the first to hear a brand new song written on-the-spot by one of the teams willing to take our New Musical Challenge."

The Noteworthy Life of Howard Barnes

"Sam Carner and Derek Gregor's songs have been presented in concert hundreds of times each year in venues around the world. Their musical Unlock’d was produced Off-Broadway in 2013 and won a Richard Rodgers Award. Elizabeth A. Davis is a Tony-nominated actor for her portrayal of Réza in Once. She participated in Goodspeed's JMF Writer’s Colony to develop the new musical Indian Joe and will present songs from that work."
