News Gorilla Rep Crowns its Kingly Comedy, Ubu, in NYC's Washington Square July 7-23 If you didn't get a chance to take the ride up to Connecticut to catch the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Macbeth, or if you missed the abbreviated run of the Broadway production with Kelsey Grammer, you still have a chance to see another version of the infamous "Scottish play." In what seems oddly appropriate, with the current popularity of the play, the Gorilla Repertory Theatre Company launches its parody, Ubu Is King!, playing outdoors at Greenwich Village's Washington Square Park July 7-23.

Ubu is an adaptation of the French classic Ubu Roi by absurdist playwright Alfred Jarry. The original Ubu caused quite the commotion when it was originally produced in 1896 because of its extreme farce and scatological humor. The new Ubu followed the lead of the original. The first production (also Gorilla Rep's inaugural) in 1992, staged in Grand Central Station had its permit revoked by the NYPD because of it's "obscene" nature.

Gorilla Rep artistic director Christopher Carter Sanderson, who adapted and directed the production, hopes to stir up the same amount of enthusiasm for this year's show. Ubu is the third production in Gorilla's summer season following two other Shakespeare shows; Twelfth Night and wouldn't you know it... Macbeth. To conclude the Shakespeare-sandwiched season, Sanderson presents its 11th annual production ofA Midsummer Night's Dream in repertory with As You Like It.

Ubu runs on a five shows per weekend schedule July 7-23 in Washington Square Park (above West Fourth St.) in the Village. Admission is free. For more information about the performance and Gorilla Rep, call (212) 330-8086 or visit www.gorillarep.org.
