Nominations for the 40th annual Grammy Awards will be announced Jan. 6, with theatre fans watching to see which of the 1997 bumper crop of cast albums get nominated in the Best Cast Recording category. Among those eligible for this year's award, to be given Feb. 25, 1998: Titanic, The Life, Jekyll & Hyde, Floyd Collins, Chicago, Candide and Play On!, among others.
Side Show and The Lion King were released after the deadline and will be eligible in 1999.
Grammy winners in Best Cast Recording category have been quirky, to say the least. In 1997, Riverdance beat Rent.
