First seen in 2002 at the Crucible, Sheffield, where Grandage will continue to work as a director on various productions, this version of Shakespeare's late play stars Sir Derek Jacobi as Prospero, an exiled Duke with magic powers, which he uses to start the tempest of the play's title. Partly because it was widely reviewed at the Crucible, there has been no official press night set for this London transfer to the Old Vic. The production began its London run on Thursday, Jan. 16, and the press will go on various nights this week.
Another production of The Tempest, a 90-minute version that is part of a Shakespeare Unplugged nationwide tour, will play at the Cottesloe at the National Theatre for just two nights, March 19 and 20.
