News   Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong Aims His New Paper Bullets! Musical at Both Coasts

Billie Joe Armstrong of the rock group Green Day got a taste of Broadway with his 2010 musical American Idiot. Armstrong is scheduled to return to the world of theatre this fall with his latest effort, the Beatles-esque musical These Paper Bullets!, which is planning productions in New York and Los Angeles this fall.

The musical, described as a "modish rip-off of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing with a serious backbeat," had its world premiere at Yale Repertory Theatre in 2014.

The show will be the opening production of Geffen Playhouse's 2015-16 season at the Gil Cates Theatre in Los Angeles Sept. 8-Oct. 18. Following the Geffen bow, the show will transfer to New York, where it will have its Off-Broadway premiere in November as part of the Off-Broadway Atlantic Theater Company's 30th anniversary season.

The show has a book by Emmy-nominee and 2006 Pulitzer finalist Rolin Jones (The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow), and direction by Jackson Gay. No casting has been announced.

The plot description for the Yale production seems to indicate that the show will depart fairly widely from Shakespeare's romantic comedy about lovers/rivals Beatrice and Benedick: "Meet the Quartos," the Yale Rep press notes stated. "Ben , Claude, Balth and Pedro. Their fans worship them. Scotland Yard fears them. And their former drummer will stop at nothing to destroy them. Can these fab four from Liverpool find true love in London and cut an album in seven nights?"

Announcements from Atlantic Theater's Company and the Geffen did not say whether any of the Yale cast or creative team will take part in the upcoming productions.

See Playbill.com's separate story on the rest of the Atlantic Theatre Company's season lineup.
