News Gretchen Mol Is The Good Mother, Beginning Off-Broadway Oct. 31 Gretchen Mol stars as a mother trying to make ends meet in the New Group production of Francine Volpe's psychological thriller The Good Mother, which begins Off-Broadway previews Oct. 31 at the Acorn Theatre. The production had been scheduled to begin Oct. 29, but Hurricane Sandy forced the New Group to delay the start of performances.

Scott Elliott directs Volpe's drama, which will officially open Nov. 15 for a run through Dec. 22. The Good Mother launches the New Group's 2012-13 season.

Mol (Chicago, The Shape of Things, "Boardwalk Empire") leads a cast that also features Mark Blum (The Best Man, Twelve Angry Men), Darren Goldstein (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson), Alfredo Narciso (The Ugly One) and Eric Nelsen (13 the Musical).

Here's how it's billed: "In this taut psychological thriller, Larissa is a single mother who can barely meet the mortgage on her house in Mount Vernon, NY. When a bizarre incident involving her 4-year-old daughter forces her to face someone from her past, her own questionable actions come back to haunt her."

The Good Mother has set design by Derek McLane, costume design by Cynthia Rowley, lighting design by Jason Lyons and sound design by Bart Fasbender.

Volpe's plays include The Given, Late Fragment, Sweethearts and Giftbox.
