Director Gary Griffin, fresh from the success of the Chicago debut of Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde, will stage the Windy City premiere of Canadian playwright Norm Foster's Wrong for Each Other, beginning previews Nov. 20 and opening Nov. 23.
The romantic comedy (through Jan. 3) explores the rocky relationship of Norah and Rudy, whose history unfolds in flashback when they meet in a restaurant. Brittany Productions is producing the play at Victory Gardens Theater, 2257 North Lincoln Ave.
Susan Hart plays Nora and Stef Tovar is Rudy in a staging designed by Rick Paul (sets), Kevin Hagan (lighting), Marty Higginbotham (sound), Jana Stauffer (costumes) and Kamys (original music).
Foster is a prolific Canadian playwright whose work has been seen at Theatre New Brunswick (Office Hours ), Theatre Aquarius in Hamilton, Ontario (Jupiter in July ) and the Shaw Festival (libretto, A Foggy Day ). Other plays include The Last Resort, Here on the Flight Path, Ethan Claymore's Christmas, Sinner, The Melville Boys, Drinking Alone and The Foursome. His The Affections of May was the most-produced play in Canadian regional theatre in 1991.
Griffin is one of the most active directors in Chicago, dividing his time between musicals and plays. He staging of Putting It Together last season was nominated for several Joseph Jefferson Awards. He has been a multiple Jeff nominee and winner over the years. He is co-artistic director of the Apple Tree Theatre. His Famous Door Theatre Co. Staging of Beautiful Thing in Chicago transfers to Off-Broadway's Cherry Lane Theatre Feb. 14. Tickets are $18-$24. For information, call (773) 871-3000.
