Actress Melanie Griffith, who registered a hit with her turn as Roxie Hart in the Broadway production of Chicago, told the New York Times that she would be like to audition for the Cy Coleman musical.

"I understand, that's a tough show, that's carrying a show," said Griffith, "and it's dancing through a whole show. So it's right. it's right that they would make me [audition]. But it's rather humbling, I must say."

Thus far, three stars of the big and small screens have been connected to the revival: "Dharma and Greg" star Jenna Elfman; film and stage actress Marisa Tomei; and "Ally McBeal" actress and Tony winner for Nine, Jane Krakowski.

Meanwhile, Grittith may reprise her performance in Chicago in Los Angeles in 2004.

A representative for Chicago could not confirm the Los Angeles plan and no official announcement has been made, but sources close to the project confirmed that discussions are underway. The engagement would likely run a month and begin after the holidays. Griffith would join the extant Chicago touring company as it makes its way to Los Angeles. Griffith is due to leave the Ambassador Theatre on Oct. 5. She began her first Broadway stint July 11. Griffith won an enthusiastic review from the powerful New York Times and has been a tonic for the box office.

Both Chicago and Sweet Charity are produced by Barry and Fran Weissler, the Broadway producing team fond of casting Hollywood talent. Additionally, both musicals were directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, and starred Gwen Verdon.
