As Times Square rang in 2019 with a mix of confetti and rain, the surrounding theatres celebrated with the pouring in of cash. The 39 shows playing the week ending December 30 grossed a total of $57,807,272, marking a new record as it surpasses last year’s final tally of $50.4 million.
Like 2017, Hamilton, The Lion King, and Wicked closed out the year surpassing $3 million. The first led the pack with $4,041,493 in eight performances, while the latter two, playing nine performances each, trailed behind.
Fellow Disney titles Frozen and Aladdin joined The Lion King in breaking house records at their respective theatres, as did Wicked, The Illusionists — Magic of the Holidays (which played 16 performances at the Marquis Theatre), Mean Girls, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which, at $2,424,850, also set a new weekly record for the highest-grossing play in Broadway history.
