News Growing Pains: Revamped Broadway Musical 13 Begins TUTS Run A reworked version Jason Robert Brown's coming-of-age musical 13 makes its Houston debut at the Theatre Under the Stars beginning Sept. 10.

Roy Hamlin directs the production for the Academy at Theatre Under The Stars' Humphreys School of Musical Theatre. The limited run will conclude Sept. 12.

After a short-lived Broadway run in 2008, Tony-winning composer Jason Robert Brown (Parade, Songs for a New World) and librettists Dan Elish and Robert Horn re-explored the work during a test run at the French Woods Performing Arts Camp in Hancock, NY, this summer.

Brown previously told Playbill.com that he and his collaborators "loved the show we put on Broadway, but felt that 13's future life would be well served by taking one more shot at certain sections of the piece, particularly those sections that might not make as much sense to an audience outside of New York City."

According to Brown's blog, the revised production restores Evan's song "Being a Geek" (cut out of town) and Lucy's showstopper "Opportunity," which is heard on the original Broadway cast recording, but was excised from the show prior to opening.

The TUTS run of 13 features Aaron Boudreaux as the uprooted Evan Goldman, with Sean Hardin as his friend Archie and Sydney Roberts (TUTS' Les Miserables, The Stephen Schwartz Project, Geppetto & Son) as Patrice. Additional principal casting includes Betty Marie Muessig (TUTS' Les Miserables, The Stephen Schwartz Project) as Lucy, Chris Canal as Brett and Stephanie Styles as Kendra.

The ensemble comprises Alicia Reece, Ashton Muniz, Austin Jacobs, Bethany Trevino, Billy Cohen, Brooke Humphrey, Charity VanTassel, Christian Warner, Conner Jones, Danielle Norwood, Haley Beiermeister, Jackson Perrin, Jake Muck, Lauren Selig, Luke Hamilton, Malcom Walker, Monica Brown, Monique Groen, Morgan MacInnes, Morgan Starr, Ryan Jacobs, Ryan Kennedy, Ryne Nardecchia, Sam Burkett, Sandy Valles, Sydney Roberts and Whitney Brandt.

As with the Broadway engagement, the Houston bow features an onstage band of teens performing the score. 13 has choreography by Shay Rodgers and musical direction by John Cornelius.

Press notes for 13 read: "Evan Goldman has it all — he's popular, has the perfect family and lives in the greatest city in the world — New York. That is until his parents get divorced and he's forced to move with his Mom… to Indiana. Uprooted from his old life, he has to make new friends and somehow maneuver his way through the minefield of High School to become part of the 'in-crowd.'"

13 was developed at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and Goodspeed Musicals' Norma Terris Theatre in Connecticut. The musical premiered on Broadway Sept. 16, 2008, and ran through Jan. 4, 2009.

The latest version of 13 will be available for licensing from Music Theatre International.
