The master class, on April 11 at 6 p.m., will feature three young ensembles: the Attacca String Quartet from the Juilliard School; the Spruce String Quartet from the Curtis Institute of Music, and the Lorenzo String Quartet from the Manhattan School of Music.
At the open rehearsal, on April 12 at 3:30 p.m., the Guarneri will perform Richard Danielpour's String Quartet No. 5 ("In Search of La Vita Nuova"), Haydn's Quartet in B-flat Major ("Sunrise"), and Schubert's Quintet in C Major. The Schubert Quintet will include David Soyer, the ensemble's original cellist. The rehearsal is part of the quartet's preparation for a later concert, at Alice Tully Hall, which will include the New York premiere of Danielpour's work.
The panel discussion will include the Guarneri members; Soyer; pianist Claude Frank; violist Steven Tenenbom of the Orion String Quartet; violist Rafael Hillyer, a former member of the Juilliard String Quartet; David Geber, associate dean of performance and chairman of strings at Manhattan School of Music and former cellist of the American String Quartet; and cellist Timothy Eddy of the Orion String Quartet.
The Guarneri Quartet was founded in 1964 by violinist Arnold Steinhardt and John Dalley, violist Michael Tree, and David Soyer. Peter Wiley replaced Soyer, his former teacher, in 2001.
